As her thoughts began to quiet she found herself wondering where her husband was and whom he was with, one of the beautiful women gossip constantly linked him to, no doubt. Trying to deny the jealousy burning a hole in her heart she decided it didn’t matter. She had known from the beginning he only wanted her for her physical attributes. Tomorrow she and Marie would attend Lady Barrymore’s breakfast, and afterwards she was going to make a visit to London’s infamous bow street runners. She’d find information to prove beyond all doubt she was innocent and when she had it, she would shove it down Aiden Darlington’s throat.

* * * *

A week after his abrupt departure from Thistledowne, Aiden found himself, along with Julian, Gryphon and four others, sitting at a card table in a dark overly warm parlor off the Earl of Ravenwood’s ballroom. Obscured, in a game of poker, attempting to hide from the rest of society, He had spent six days of his stay in London in the quiet solitude of his townhouse, alternating between a state of incestuous rage and mindless worry. By late on the seventh night, he still hadn’t found any peace. Everywhere he looked he was reminded of Jezebel, and with those reminders came the same mixture of feeling which he had left Thistledowne in the hope of escaping. If he wished to suffer in silence, he’d been better off remaining at Thistledowne, at least there he would have servants to accommodate his ominous mood.

Sick of his own dismal company he grabbed his cloak and set out for Alcott’s. After only ten minutes, however, his friends more observant then he would have liked, had noticed his disposition and suggested Stefan’s party as an easy distraction. He had instantly agreed. Now sitting in the overcrowded room, he almost wished for the miserable company of his own thoughts.

For a fleeting moment, he allowed himself to wonder what his wife had been doing in his absence. He knew from experience after a few days alone at Thistledowne, the large estate could become almost achingly quiet. Jezebel, always bright and energetic, wouldn’t cope well with such silence. She had likely chosen to spend the night wrapped in her lover’s passionate embrace. God knew with her beauty and wit she had only to crook her finger and men would come rushing to fill her needs. At the thought a fury, unlike any he knew he was capable of, boiled up inside him.

Pushing away from the table, he bid his friends a curt good night and strode out of the room. Jezebel was his wife; no man other than him had any right to that beautiful little body of hers. A beautiful body which he was about to put to good use. She would have to say her farewells to her Cher Ami, and he would see she did.

Departing Stefan’s townhouse he stopped at his own long enough to pack his things, which he accomplished in record time, before continuing to his destination.
